This blows my mind it is 2010 (almost) and there isn’t a single simple clean low-cost tech solution for effects? We still use patch cables, and effects boxes that run on batteries?
All of my students were born in the current millenium, so I wonder how many of them have seen cassette tapes before. I’ve mostly used my iPod, which is an amazing tool for elementary general music classes! But now they’re begging me to hear what a record sounds like…

I like the pre-amble. But the top #1 thing I hate about top 10 lists is when they consist of so much metaphor and snark I don’t even know what I just read.

I agree with passion that bad signing and poor musicianship is not indie or artistic - it’s just sucking.

If you have been blessing everyone around you with cell phone “performances” of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” rest assured that your cell phone provider won’t have to pay royalties on it. A federal court has ruled that ringtones played aloud in public are not infringing on the content owners’ copyrights because they don’t constitute a true performance. (In other news, children are still allowed to sing songs without paying royalties.)

Joking aside (actually, that’s less of a joke than you might think), the ringtone argument was made by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) earlier this year when it sued certain mobile carriers in the US in an attempt to force them to fork over royalties every time a customer’s ringtone is played. Even though the carriers were already paying for download rights to the songs, ASCAP argued that each ring was a “performance” and therefore those download payments weren’t enough.

Seen at ars technica

IMO: Like crabs in a bucket, I would like to see an overall shift in attitude that the public is wanting - more open more free, artists and labels get paid - but music is a gift to us all, you cannot grasp a rainbow. Would I be so bold to predict that the industries that reflect this peacful value will thrive? Or will it be like Jack Black’s character Dewey Finn said:

- The Man.

Oh, you don't know The Man ?

Well, he's everywhere.

In the White House, down the hall.
Miss Mullins, she's The Man.

And The Man ruined the ozone,
and he's burning down the Amazon,

and he kidnapped Shamu
and put her in a chlorine tank.

There used to be a way to stick it
to The Man. It was called rock 'n' roll.

But guess what. Oh, no.

The Man ruined that too
with a little thing called MTV !

So don't waste your time

trying to make anything cool
or pure or awesome.

The Man's just gonna call you a fat,
washed-up loser and crush your soul.

So do yourselves a favor
and just give up !
